The Holter Museum of Art invites you to celebrate the arts this year by treating yourself or someone you know to a class or workshop taught by world-class teachers and artists. This slate of Holter education programs provides opportunities for a wide range of interests from painting to fiber arts, from architecture to writing.

Summer 2008 Classes for Children

Creativity Camp I with Jason Gutzmer and Penelope Baquero

Ages 8–12 Mon–Fri, June 16–20, 9am–3pm Limited to 15 students
Join Missoula artists Jason Gutzmer and Penelope Baquero for a week of mask making, story telling, painting, and theatre. Myths and legends of the Americas will inspire papier mache masks, paintings and a performance of new myths of hope in a final celebration.
Penelope Baquero was born and raised in Colombia, South America, and has worked for many years traveling between South America and Montana performing, teaching art, creative movement and dance with all ages. Baquero has a Masters in Integrated Arts and Education and developed the performance and visual arts program at the Missoula International School. Mixed media artist Jason Gutzmer has been working in performance art, painting constructions, video production and teaching in art and sustainability projects all over the Americas for more than 10 years. He has a Master of Fine Arts in digital cinema and teaches media arts and experimental documentary at the University of Montana.

Monet’s Garden: Young Kids with Julie Barnes FULL

Ages 4-6 • Mon–Fri, June 23–27, 1–3:30pm • Limited to 10 kids
A color-based class for the young artist based upon an imaginary trip to the famous Impressionist’s garden. Projects will include garden paintings, pastel drawings, stone assemblages, printed lily pad cushions, and miniature ponds.Julie Barnes has been an art teacher for many years and is new to Helena. She teaches for the PEAK enrichment program, the Emerson Cultural Center in Bozeman and the Holter Museum of Art.
Tuition: $65 (all materials included)

Art Basics with Phoebe Toland FULL

Ages 8–12 Mon–Fri, July 21–25, 9 am–noon
Drawing, printmaking, painting, bookmaking, and sculpture, all in one week! Students engage in a new project daily. Each day there will be a brief introduction of materials and the history of each technique or medium, and then students can explore these basics, as they discover what they most enjoy through experimenting with new approaches and mediums.Phoebe Toland is an abstract painter who lives in Helena and has been teaching at the Hotler for 10 years. She earned an MFA at Montana State University and exhibits her work extensively in the region. She has served as an artist in the schools in Helena and elsewhere in Montana and has taught students of all ages how to make, as well as appreciate art.

Let’s Draw with Phoebe Toland

Ages 8–12 • Mon–Fri, July 21–25, 1–3:30pm
Explore the art of drawing. From still life to perspective, and drawing outdoors, students will receive a good foundation for learning to draw what they see and what they imagine. See Toland’s bio above.

Creativity Camp II: Photography with Kurt Keller

Ages 8–12Mon–Fri, July 28–Aug 1, 9am–3pmLimited to 15 students
Learn all about photography!!! This class will make photographs with digital cameras as well as simple pinhole cameras. Once the pictures are taken, students will learn to develop and print their own black and white photographs in the darkroom. During the week, participants will have a chance to test their creativity and discover new ways to look at the world around us.Kurt Keller is a commercial and fine art photographer living in Helena, Montana. Born and raised in Akron, Ohio, he earned an associate’s degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University, both in photo illustration. Keller has been an instructor for the Holter Museum and an artist-in-residence.

Birds Are Special! Young Kids with Katie FULL

Ages 5–7Mon–Fri, Aug 4–8, 9–11:30am
All week students will create birds, from the tiny hummingbird to the magestic eagle. Participants will make wings, masks and nests as we imagine being able to fly in the sky and even underwater. After this class, none of us will ever see birds as ordinary again. Teacher Katie Knight loves being an Earthling, making photographs, and building with clay. A teacher for 32 years, she has taught students of all ages in diverse cultural settings. She earned an MFA at the University of Minnesota, and an Masters of Arts in Education and Art Design at Northern Michigan University.

Creativity Camp III with Katie Knight: Mother Earth, Father Time

Ages 8–12 Mon–Fri, Aug 11–15, 9am–3pm
Play with the natural cycles of Mother Earth as she spins through time. Explore our place in the midst of nature using photography, ceramics, painting, and mixed media sculpture. Partner with the powerful electromagnetic energy of the sun to make photography. Imitate the way the earth fires materials into rocks to make clay hard. Make sun dials that tell time using the movement of the earth around the sun. The pigments of clay are formed by the elements of the earth and can be used for beautiful dyes to color shirts.See what you can discover and create by playing with time on our beautiful planet! The Ancient Art of Origami with Tim Speyer

Ages 12 and up Mon–Fri, June 23–27, 9am–noon
Origami, a classic art form of Japanese culture, involves the creation of figures from a single square piece of paper by simple and complex folding techniques. Participants will learn the international origami folding symbols and become proficient at creating numerous animals, birds, and other figures. Once accomplished at basic folding techniques, the sky is the limit as to the complexity of your projects. Once you’ve taken a foil gum wrapper and folded it into a piece of art, you’ll realize that learning origami is an act of magic you’ll possess for a lifetime. Tim Speyer has spent the last 11 years as an art teacher at C.R. Anderson Middle School. He enjoys working with many art mediums including origami . Many students have seen his magical cloth maché creatures which reside at The Montana Book Company.

Photography with Kurt Keller

Ages 12 and up Mon–Thur, July 7–10, 10am–3pm Limited to 12 students
Explore new ways of seeing the world. Build and use a real camera! Explore the creative potential of the simplest image-forming device, the pinhole camera. Experience the magic of developing photographs as you learn basic black and white darkroom processes. Come explore diverse subjects: portraits, landscapes, and still life. Technical discoveries develop side-by-side with discoveries about how we personally view our world. Participants will make paper negatives and positive prints from their own cameras They will also experiment with special effects and trick photography using digital cameras. See Keller's bio above.

Möbius strip:
noun Geometry. A continuous, one-sided surface formed by twisting one end of a rectangular strip through 180˚ about the longitudinal axis of the strip and attaching this end to the other.
What does this mean?
The Holter Museum Möbius program is an ever-evolving creative path designed to serve those who want ongoing, varied and in-depth study in drawing, painting, printmaking, or photography. Courses in each of the areas are offered every season, giving participants the opportunity to work with various artist teachers and to explore different techniques while developing depth of experience and competence in their chosen area.
For teachers: OPI teacher Renewal Units are available to teachers for Möbius classes and all other classes offered by the Holter Museum.
