FAQs

What is a docent?

The word docent derives from the Latin verb "docere" meaning to teach, to conduct, to lead into, to take care of, and to learn. In the museum world, the word has come to mean a guide. Docents conduct tours of the museum's exhibitions and some teach hands-on art activities to touring school groups and others.

do·cent: 1. a volunteer museum educator 2. A treasured member of Holter educations staff.

What background is required?

Just an interest in learning about art and sharing it with our community.

What is the time commitment?

This is flexible according to each docent's schedule. Plan on at least 3 hours per month. That's one tour and one docent meeting. If you have more time and are interested in greater participation we encourage you to do so.

Is there training involved?

We help our new docents out by explaining and modeling the process of giving a tour and then partnering them with a member of our more experienced docent group. Partners observe, lead tours together and teach hands-on activities. We provide resources on touring, working with groups of people art and art history. The exhibitions at the Holter Museum are always changing so we all learn together about each new artist's and their work.
