Kurt Weiser: Eden Revisited

The first major survey of the ceramic work of Kurt Weiser, Regents Professor at Arizona State University and former director of the Archie Bray Foundation. Kurt is a true postmodernist. His intriguing narratives and lush imagery—china-painted onto porcelain vessels—combine daydreams, travels, and exotic fantasies. Organized by the ASU Art Museum’s Ceramics Research Center, Eden Revisited is curated by Peter Held and sponsored by the Windgate Charitable Foundation.
Of the Earth: Beck and Baraz

Helenans Nan Beck and Joseph Baraz have an eye for the material of this earth. Beck interprets local rock surfaces in her mixed media paintings, and Baraz carves stone and bends lead sheets into abstract sculpture.

Gary Horinek: Mentor
April 4-June 15
High Gallery
Installation artist and wheat farmer Gary Horinek creates a dramatic and interactive faux landscape in the High Gallery. Horinek recreates the environment of the Montana Hi-Line that he explored as a child, calling on the landscape as mentor and using specific objects as metaphors to tell a fragmented story of what ultimately is a story of self.

Christiane Buell: Transcontinental Vision

Christiane Buell, born in Zurich, Switzerland, is a graduate of the California College of Arts & Crafts. She has lived in the Helena area since her residency at the Montana Artists Refuge. Buell’s oil paintings, developed through a process of layering, sanding, over-painting, and scraping, achieve a lyrical response to the natural environment.
George Longfish: A Retrospective

As an educator, curator, and artist, George Longfish has made significant contributions to the identity and visibility of the contemporary Native American art movement. Known for his mixed media paintings, Longfish often uses humor and irony to address the issues of decolonization and Native American identity. This traveling exhibition, spanning Longfish’s 35-year career, originates from the Montana Museum of Art and Culture and travels under the auspices of the Montana Museum and Art Gallery Directors Association.
Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate

Seeking to promote arts-based civic dialogue, the Holter Museum of Art invited artists to reflect upon, respond to, or transform white supremacist hate propaganda published by the World Church of the Creator and acquired by the Museum’s project partner, the Montana Human Rights Network. More than one hundred artists from coast to coast—working as individuals and as teams—responded to the Museum’s call for entry in astonishing ways, using a wide range of media: sculpture, video, painting, photography, collage, printmaking, mixed media, book arts, beadwork, fiber, installation, and performance. The startling and moving result, Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate, will travel throughout Montana after the exhibition closes in Helena. Ryan Mitchell: Oscillations of Optimism

The Holter Museum presents the work of Missoula-based ceramic artist Ryan Mitchell in a month-long exhibition in the Museum’s Artworks Gallery. The exhibition, Oscillations of Optimism, features Mitchell’s wood- and salt-fired ceramic vessels and wall pieces. Work in the Artworks Gallery is for sale.
Out of the Vault
High Gallery

This one-month exhibition in the High Gallery will house more than a hundred works from the Holter Museum’s permanent collection. Recently, the Holter was awarded a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services with matching funds from Miriam Sample to purchase painting storage racks for the collection vault. While these much-needed sliding screens are being installed in the vault, the collection is coming out. We welcome you to come celebrate this exciting addition to our vault while honoring works from some of the region’s most acclaimed artists.

Andrea Nungarrayi Martin - Sealed-Bid Auction

Six paintings by Australian Aboriginal artist Andrea Nungarrayi Martin will be auctioned off to the public in a sealed-bid auction that will run for two weeks. Martin recently spent two weeks as an artist in residence at the Holter Museum of Art. Students from around the county painted their own Aboriginal paintings while Martin created, in the traditional Aboriginal dot painting style, the six paintings now being offered by auction at the Holter.
