Kalon Baughan graduated from Albion College in 1988 where he received a B.F.A. with honors in fine art and art history and earned the Outstanding Artist Award. He has painted professionally since then, returning to Albion College as their Artist in Residence from 1990 and 1991. Baughan has exhibited in group and individual shows and has received numerous awards and honors. He has been a member of the society of Animal Artists and has been juried into their prestigious annual exhibit. Taking research trips into the wild is Baughan’s true passion, and with his art he strives to capture the allure of animals in their natural environments. With his figure drawings Kalon depicts the artistry of the human form and the depth of emotion that can be hidden therein.
In addition to his art, Baughan strives to support wildlife conservation by applying his skill as a self-taught naturalist and photographer to the study of rare carnivores. He uses remotely triggered trail cameras to capture detailed images of wildlife, primarily wolverines and lynx. Through partnerships with state and federal agencies, as well as not-for-profit organizations, the data gathered is used to inform species-specific conservation in Montana.
The combined study of fine art, photography and the scientific method have provided a unique backdrop for my life’s career as a wildlife painter, conservation photographer and wildlife researcher. I strive to develop both an artistic aesthetic that is poignant and profoundly honest while keeping in harmony with the art of scientific observation. In so doing, I seek to capture wildlife in its true form and remain an empathetic intermediary between the subject that I portray and the viewer. More than simply replicating my subjects, I seek to understand them and capture the essence of each individual animal, imbuing them with their own unique sense of character that is also indicative of the species. Ultimately, it is my hope that nuanced portrayals of wildlife will lead the viewer towards a greater sense of awareness and admiration for all things wild, and perhaps even inspire a stronger commitment to conservation.
Committed to showcasing legacy, established and emerging artists, we aim to be a vibrant hub that celebrates the power of art, in all its forms and expressions, to transform lives.
