Art Feeds the Artists Within IV – Artists in Schools Residency

February 11 - June 3, 2025

This year’s residency saw 403 students across 18 classes at 2 elementary schools learn from 7 artists over the course of 8 weeks.

Each week of residencies, students engaged in art-making processes that were specifically developed for grade level and developmental stage, and then integrated with classroom curriculum whenever possible. There is no substitute to exploring, learning, and diving into hands-on learning in an art infused curriculum and classroom.  The Holter’s focus for this residency was to provide ample opportunity to generate art and solve creative problems that come along when working through art projects. Success in one area often multiplies to success in other parts of students’ lives. Alongside the many opportunities this residency provides to express, reflect, share, and create, this sustained relationship between schools, the museum, and community artists serves as an avenue to behavioral success for students, and in turn, academic and overall success for students.

Holter Teaching Artists were joined by guest community Artists in delivering hands-on art lessons that integrated watercolors, color pencils or color crayons, markers, and an art grade notebook. Additional specialty supplies of colorful construction paper, cardboard and wire, oil pastels, brown paper lunch bags, and watercolor grade paper were provided. At the end of the residency, students keep their bag of supplies to continue making art!
