Join Germany Club students from Capital and Helena High schools in commemoration of the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The Berlin Wall fell on 9 November 1989. In 1989, political changes in Eastern Europe and civil unrest in Germany put pressure on the East German government to loosen some of its regulations on travel to West Germany. The wall’s destruction became a symbol of unification for the previously divided Central, Eastern, and Western European countries. What was left of the wall became an open air gallery, known as the East Side Gallery. “The East Side Gallery is understood as a monument to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the peaceful negotiation of borders and conventions between societies and people.” Capital and Helena High students will spend Oct. 26-Nov. 12 recreating a portion of the wall to then be covered in their own artwork.
Nov. 13, students from both schools will be selling baked goods and hot chocolate as a fundraise to raise funds for their upcoming trip to Germany.
Nov. 14th, MSU professors will lead a short lecture and discussion about the history behind the wall. The public is then welcome to watch as we tear down the wall (for insurance reasons, it is students only tearing down the wall).
